Two of the main laws that help fund special education and protect the rights of students with disabilities are the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (often just called “Section 504.”). The IDEA was originally passed in 1975 to make sure that children with disabilities have the opportunity to receive a free, appropriate public education, just like other children. IDEA requires that special education and related services be made available to every eligible child with a disability.
